I’m sure you’ve heard that smiling is contagious, but did you know that it can also be so much more? Studies have shown that the mere act of smiling can improve your mood, decrease anxiety and stress and cause a reaction in your body that reduces harmful toxins that can lead to a variety of ailments and diseases. The mere act of smiling can improve our own health. So just imagine what would happen if we smiled more frequently? We would cause a chain reaction as others smile back at us and together we would become less stressed and would have better health overall! Not to mention we would all be in a better mood!
Recently my daughter shared this wonderful little short film with me. It truly touched my heart and is a great example of what smiling and being kind to others can do not only for the giver and recipient but the ripple effect is truly inspiring. Take a moment to watch this and then some back for the remainder of my blog.
Wasn’t that great! Do you feel awesome and inspired? I know I do! I read recently that our smile is our armour to wear everyday as we go to war. Wow! I never thought of it that way, but it’s true. Every day we encounter others who want to bring us down in one way or another. Maybe not intentionally, but in some cases, maybe it is. Whatever the intent, if we wear our smiles, we are ahead of the game by showing others that we are being true to ourselves and that we believe there is always a reason to smile! If we lift each other up on a regular basis instead of tear each other down, we will eventually spread this “smiling” contagious disease around! I know it warms my heart to see someone smile.
Take a moment to make a list of the things that make you smile. I began my list this morning and I’vew promised myself to add to it every time I find something else that makes me smile. Those of you who know me, know that I am a new grandma! My precious first grandchild, Stella Rain, was born on July 3. Just seeing her makes me smile so big that tears run down my face from the sides of my mouth pushing my cheeks against my tear ducts! When I look at my life, many things make me smile. My wonderful husband of nearly 35 years, my beautiful grown children, a daughter and a son that are the biggest blessings in my life; the gift of life each morning when I awake; the sight of a sunrise over the ocean when visiting my parents. My list could literally fill up a full journal or several of them! Even so, there are times when I find myself not smiling. There are times when the outside world reaches the core of my being and brings me to my knees. Without the knowledge of my true source of joy, these times might get the best of me, but in good and bad times, I can smile not because of earthly things, but because I know that Jesus gave His life so that I could live abundantly in HIs grace and mercy. Does that mean I won’t have moments when I don’t smile? Absolutely not, but is does mean that God will guide me through those times if I trust in Him always.
I’m learning more and more these days that God has a purpose for my life and He is in complete control. I like to think I’m in control, but the bottom line is, I’m not. Yes, God gives us free will to choose, but if we are truly seeking HIm in His word and through prayer, we will be choosing His path for our lives. What a great assurance to know that through His word, prayer and supplication, God’s desires for our lives will also become our desires and through it all, He has promised an abundance beyond our imagination. We can rest knowing that we are His and His plan for our life is perfect!
My new friend & International evangelist, Norwegian, Edward John, put it like this:
“A precious moment in time! The longer I live, the more I see how weak, I really am. My meditation goes to the words of the Apostle Paul (my favorite these days) who actually gave us the most brilliant way to living a great life (with all its elements included) by doing ONE thing only – Knowing Christ Jesus. I don’t know about you friend, but I made up my mind today and heart today, that ONLY one thing matters from hence forth for me – that I get to KNOW the lover of my soul, Jesus. I’m a sinner and weak! But, He is strong and mighty. I’ve determined to stay closer to Him than I’ve ever done. I want to live and see His glory revealed through my weakness. I want to reach the other side, where my Lord has prepared a home for me, and all who do believe on His name. I want to see it! I want to feel it! Today, has been a crucial day, in my life. It’s the day that the Lord has made. I went deep into my heart and let him search me. I’m wrong! He is right. I will follow Him closer than I’ve ever done. I will have the tenacity of the Apostle Paul (can’t wait to meet him too, by the way) and focus my eyes on life himself – JESUS. What a wonderful name! JESUS – in Him we have it all.”
Philippians 3:8 For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ. (The Apostle Paul)
If we approach each new day in this way and we seek God in every moment, yearning to know Him more and more, then friends, I believe smiling will simply come naturally as we know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that this world belongs to Him and He is sovereign always! He never changes! His word has been the same since it was written! Think about that friends! God’s promises have NEVER changed! Seek Him in all you do and SMILE knowing He is with you always!
